Vintage 1967 Laney Pre Production Supergroup LA60BL Amplifier
Vintage 1967 Laney Pre Production Supergroup LA60BL Amplifier
A very special piece of history right here. Recently I was contacted by a guy in Colchester who said he had unearthed an amplifier 6-years ago. He found it in a London garage, where it had been since 1982. It wasn’t until a few months ago that he realised what a rarity he had unearthed.
After contacting Laney, they had told him that this was one of the first Laney amplifiers ever made. They stated it had been made within the first few months of starting, and was pre-production line. We know them better as a ‘shed build’ by Lyndon Laney himself.
Don’t confuse this with the slightly later ‘late-67’ prototypes that have been on the market…this is even earlier.
The ally panel, the slatted cabinet, the etched valve lineup on the panel, the August ‘67 dated parts, and most notably the pinstripe cloth covering the front panel, all show this to be 1967.
The only pictures I’ve ever seen of this model amplifier (apart from a matching one currently in the Laney museum that they sent to me) are some pretty awesome pictures of pre-black sabbath band ‘Earth’, one of Ozzy jamming with a local band, and then the earliest picture of Black Sabbath after the name change. Wouldn’t it be awesome if this is THE one – finding its way to London and then back up to the midlands?!
I’m never going to prove that, but I get a very good feeling as not many of these pre-productions were made!
All the early Sabbath recordings would have been done on this very model amplifier, not the slightly later ones. You’ll not get a closer sound than this!
