Vintage 1966 Marshall JTM45 MKIV Super Tremolo Amplifier Head Ex Phoenix
Vintage 1966 Marshall JTM45 MKIV Super Tremolo Amplifier Head Ex Phoenix
This is an incredibly rare and special piece, not often seen. A 1966 Marshall Super Tremolo, previously owned by the legendary Romanian rock band Phoenix. Even rarer, this is an untampered example. Many of these amps were converted into so-called ‘Bluesbreakers’ over the years. However this one remains true to its original Super Tremolo specification, exactly as Marshall intended. It’s sat in a European collection for many decades, and now coming to market for the first time since! The Super Tremolo sits in that magical mid-60s Marshall period — delivering the huge, harmonically rich plexi tone with the added character of Marshall’s lush valve-driven tremolo circuit.
This Amp
This particular amplifier has lived its whole life on the European continent, originally sold by Hagstrom Musikk, before recently being imported back to its home country of the UK by myself. It sports the original Marshall logo (often broken off!), all original cosmetics, and a newly made footswitch to kick the tremolo into action. All original transformers inside, most importantly, alongside a pair of KT66, GZ34 valve, Siemens ECC83 powering the tremolo circuit, and some slightly later ECC83 in the pre-amp section. The circuitboard has been well maintained, and has had a professional re-cap on the large capacitors. It’s really well looked after – one of the finest I’ve seen.
It’s also just been professionally serviced to a very high standard by my tech, so it’s sounding every bit as incredible as you’d hope. Quite honestly, it’s one of the best sounding Marshalls I’ve ever had through the shop. Between the provenance, the rarity of an unmodified example, and the stunning tone, this is a very special amplifier. This is the kind of piece that rarely appears. Grab it whilst you can!
