Product Description

Vintage 1964 Vox AC50 Big Box Valve Amplifier Head

Vintage 1964 Vox AC50 Big Box Valve Amplifier Head

This is one of the big box AC50s that were produced by Vox. The grey top, corners, black grill cloth, basketweave covering, radius back, IL pot codes (September 1964), amongst other things, all date this to the end of 1964.

This is no exception to the rarity and build-quality of these favoured early AC50s.

Service History

We pride ourselves on our inspections and the professional service of each amplifier, making this ready to plug in and play anywhere within the UK. This has just been looked at and cleaned up to the best of our ability. This amplifier came to us in a bit of a state but our technician has cleaned it up unbelievably! The following was down:

– Test all valves (1x EL34, 1x GZ34, 3x ECC83 all replaced)

– Replaced broken normal channel volume pot, mains cable and plug, and speaker cable to back panel

– Clean controls and sockets with service spray.

– Soak test using 1kHZ, 120mV sinewave into 8ohm load.

– Replace HT electrolytic capacitors where required.

– Replace signal capacitors and various resistors.

Cosmetic Inspection

You can see the condition of this amplifier in the photographs. There are quite a few scrapes to the tolex, and a few marks here and there as pictured. The back panel has a repaired hole in it too.

Originality

In our opinion, this is all original. Everything of value still remains, including the transformers. The final two pictures below show the circuit BEFORE the service. They have been cleaned up since.

Summary

One of the best quality amplifiers you’ll find. These exceed the quality of most new amplifiers and are always on the increase in regards to collectability and value.

The Music Locker prides itself on offering vintage and collectable pre-owned instruments and equipment (the Products).

We take all reasonable steps to ensure the equipment has been inspected by a competent person in the UK to ensure it complies with UK safety standards. This may mean it does not comply with the current standards in the country in which it will be subsequently used. It is the purchasers’ responsibility to ensure it is inspected by a competent person knowledgeable with the relevant electrical safety standards within that country, prior to connecting to any live electrical circuit.

It is the philosophy of The Music Locker to keep all items as original as possible, only changing original components when absolutely necessary. This includes valves, capacitors, transformers, potentiometers, frets, etc. This gives the buyer the option of tailoring to their exact needs, and may mean that the item is not operating at optimum performance levels. Therefore, your personal preference may differ, depending on your circumstances (i.e. collector or musician), and you may decide to service the item in more depth upon receiving.

The Music Locker cannot accept responsibility for any costs of refurbishment to a standard different to the one advertised.
