Vintage 1964 Vox AC30 Top Boost Amplifier Combo The Cavern

Below is a cracking picture of the previous owner (second from right) playing this amplifier at The Cavern. This was a live Radio Luxembourg ‘Sunday Night at the Cavern’ broadcast (you can see the big radio microphones next to the Cavern’s in-house ones). Unfortunately the amplifier can’t be seen in this picture but it was definitely there being played! The original owner, Arthur, who I got it off, ended up playing with Chick Graham & the Coasters too, with this one being heard alongside a guitar I bought off of him on ‘A Little You’.

The Amplifier

The amplifier itself is a wonderfully rare original 1964 Vox AC30 Top Boost version that I purchased from the original owner. It comes complete with a fitted flight case (if interested). It had been in the family since new, and the owner kept the amplifier in brilliant condition as you can see. A few years back (2018) it went through an intense service by GEE electronics which included the following. The original speakers were re-coned with 1777 correct cone kits, and are now sounding incredible. The handles were all replaced with period correct reissues. The top back panel looks to have been taken from an earlier amplifier dating to 1962 (serial 7566), but it looks the part. All the valves were replaced with JJ equivalents and work well.
It has the grey top and silver speakers from the last quarter of 1964. The amplifier dates to 1964 by the serial number, circuit board, tolex, and panel. All three original transformers work great. This is definitely one heck of an amplifier, that is a brilliant example at that! You’ll not be disappointed. The amplifier part itself has recently been serviced by a UK leading amplifier tech and it plays great! Please check out the pictures below as these form part of the description.
